Debre Damo: Ascend to Faith – The Feast of Saint Aregawi

Perched atop a towering cliff in Tigrai’s northern highlands, Debre Damo Monastery stands as a sacred beacon of devotion and timeless heritage. Each year on Tikimit 14 (October 24, Gregorian calendar), the Feast of Saint Aregawi transforms this ancient sanctuary into a vibrant pilgrimage site, drawing Orthodox Tewahedo Christians from across Ethiopia.

The journey to Debre Damo is not for the faint-hearted. Accessible only by scaling the cliff face with a leather rope, the ascent mirrors the legendary tale of Saint Aregawi, who was guided to the summit by a serpent. This sacred climb is a profound act of faith, testing both physical endurance and spiritual commitment.

Once atop the plateau, the monastery’s centuries-old stone walls echo with chants, hymns, and prayers, as monks and pilgrims gather to honor Saint Aregawi—one of the revered Nine Saints who introduced Christianity to the region. The celebration blends spirituality with tradition, creating an awe-inspiring atmosphere of reverence and communal joy.

More than a religious festival, the Feast of Saint Aregawi offers a rare glimpse into Ethiopia’s rich spiritual heritage and architectural marvels. Timqet in Tigrai: Where Faith and Culture Come Alive

Every January, Tigrai invites you to experience Timqet, Ethiopia’s grand Epiphany celebration, where ancient traditions and spiritual devotion create an unforgettable cultural journey. Join the mesmerizing Eve of Timqet procession as priests, adorned in ornate robes, carry the sacred tabot (a replica of the Ark of the Covenant) to rivers and lakes, accompanied by the glow of candles, spiritual hymns, and the rhythmic beat of kebero drums. At dawn, witness the powerful water blessing ceremony, where holy water showers the faithful, symbolizing spiritual renewal and unity.

As the rituals conclude, the festival transforms into a cultural spectacle. Streets fill with music, dance, and color—women in embroidered shammas sway gracefully, men leap energetically to drumbeats, and the air vibrates with joy and community spirit.
