Mikael Barka Church: A Timeless Wonder Above the Tigrai Highlands
Nestled high on the Atsbidera Highland Plateau, Mikael Barka Church is a breathtaking rock-hewn gem that stands proudly at 2,400 meters above sea level. Located just 18 km from Wukro, this awe-inspiring site can be reached by a scenic 15-minute walk from where visitors park along the road. As you approach the church, you’re greeted by sweeping views of the Womberta valley to the southeast and the Tsirae mountains to the west, offering a truly immersive and peaceful experience.
Carved from the very top of an isolated, rounded rock hill, this three-aisled church features 12 magnificent columns (including four freestanding, cruciform pillars), intricate bracket capitals, and a decorative ceiling adorned with a variety of patterns in relief. Though not particularly known for its paintings, the murals depicting Saint Mikael inside the church are an understated treasure. The church’s built facade—added in 1967—complements the ancient structure, adding a modern touch to its timeless beauty.
Tradition holds that Mikael Barka was first carved in the 6th century under the guidance of Abune Abraham, a revered Ethiopian saint. This church, believed to have been burned by Queen Judith in the 10th century, continues to stand as a resilient symbol of faith, culture, and history.
For those seeking a unique spiritual journey and a taste of Tigrai’s ancient heritage, Mikael Barka Church offers an unparalleled experience.
