Nestled in the heart of the old town, Tea’ka Maryam stands as the largest of the ancient elite complexes, once spanning 120 x 80 meters during the 4th to 5th centuries AD. Its grand pavilion, measuring 24 by 24 meters, was one of the smallest among the three elite complexes excavated by a German expedition in 1906. A square, four-towered building once stood in the center, surrounded by a sprawling courtyard and many rooms. Today, only remnants of this royal residence remain, having been destroyed by the Italians in the 1930s to make way for a road leading to Shire. A visit to Tea'ka Maryam invites travelers to reflect on the grandeur of a bygone era, where architecture and history intertwined in magnificent proportions.
