On the right side of Yeha Hotel lies a
remarkable site—an ancient rock-cut staircase, once used by the people of Axum
to ascend the hill of Mai Kuho. These steps, however, hold more than just
practical history; according to local tradition, they are known as Mekeyede
Egzi or "The Footsteps of Jesus Christ." It is believed that Jesus
himself once traveled these steps to aid the twin kings, Abrha and Atsbeha (Ezana
and Saizana), in their efforts to build the first church in Axum, imbuing the
site with sacred significance. Nearby, visitors can find an unfinished rock-cut
shrine, begun by Abune Libanos, a revered figure who also constructed the
church known today as Dereqa (Abune Metae). This sacred place carries a sense
of both ancient devotion and unfinished divine promise, offering a profound
connection to the spiritual roots of Axum.
