Among the thrones lining the processional way
stands a monument inscribed with Ge'ez, commemorating the legendary warlord
Hatsani Daniel. The inscription tells the story of his conquest over the
Welkite and Kassala peoples, and his bold claim of supremacy after subjugating
the former Axumite king. Dated to the 7th century, this inscription marks a
pivotal moment in Axum's history—when a military leader, through force, took
power and ensured the town’s survival. The inscription uniquely highlights a
peaceful transfer of authority from a weakened king to a strong, decisive
leader, offering visitors a glimpse into the dynamic shifts of power during
Aksum's storied past.
