Standing at 18.2 meters tall with six storeys, Stele Number Four is
a remarkable testament to the architectural prowess of the ancient Axumite
civilization. Located at the entrance to the Northern Stelae Field, near the
revered Enda Eyesus Church, this monolith weighs approximately 56 tons and is
adorned with four intricately carved faces.
The base of the stele is particularly noteworthy, featuring
beautifully round holes with handles. These features are believed to have been
used for sacrificial purposes, reflecting the ceremonial practices of the time.
Visitors
to this site can explore the juxtaposition of the monumental stele and the
historic church, offering a profound insight into the spiritual and cultural
heritage of Axum.
