Stele Number Three stands as a proud sentinel of
Axum’s ancient history. At 20.6 meters tall, with 10 storeys and weighing 160
tons, it is the third largest of Axum’s stelae, distinguished by its three
carved faces and a single door on its front side. This monolith has remained
upright in its original position since its erection, making it the last of the
standing stelae until 2008, when it was surpassed by Stele Number Two. For
years, it was the tallest and most iconic monument in Axum, a steadfast symbol
of the empire’s grandeur and a focal point of local memory.
