Standing proudly in its original place, Stele
Number Two is a symbol of resilience and history. Once taken to Rome by
Mussolini during the 1930s invasion, this monumental structure was returned to
its rightful home after more than 70 years. Now re-erected with sustainable
cement concrete filling, the second-largest stele in Axum rises 24.6 meters
high and weighs an impressive 170 tons. With 11 storeys and decorated on all
four sides, this ancient marvel also features doors on both faces, much like
its fallen predecessor, Stele Number One. Its return marks not only a physical
restoration but a reconnection with the heart of Axum's storied past.
