Nestled in the heart of Axum, the Nefas Mawcha
Tomb, or "the place where the wind comes out," stands as the largest
megalithic tomb—or dolmen—on Earth. This monumental structure is crowned by a
staggering 360-ton capstone, the second-largest stone ever used by the Axumites
or any early civilization. Massive stone blocks, secured by metal clamps,
support this immense capstone, creating a lasting testament to the engineering
prowess of the ancient world. Though the tomb suffered damage when Stela 1 fell
atop it, its grandeur and significance remain unshaken, offering a glimpse into
the might and architectural mastery of the Axumite Empire.
