Beneath the towering presence of the tallest stele lies the Mausoleum, an underground royal cemetery dating back to the 3rd or 4th century AD. Spanning an area of 17.6m by 18.8m, this subterranean sanctuary is not just a burial site for kings and their families, but also a vault that once held precious treasures and materials buried with the nobles. Ten rooms are carved into the earth, each one possibly housing royal remains and the valuable items meant to accompany them into the afterlife. Shafts of light and air filter through, offering a glimpse into this sacred, preserved space—where the wealth and power of the ancient Axumite rulers are still felt today.
