The Great Fallen Stele, once the tallest and
most impressive of its kind, lies in the Main Stelae Field above the mausoleum.
Standing at 33 meters with 13 storeys and weighing a staggering 520 tons, this
monolithic marvel was carved, transported, and erected between the 3rd and 4th
centuries AD—an engineering feat unmatched in the ancient world. Though now
broken and lying on the ground, the stele’s grandeur is still evident, with its
two doors on either side and intricately rounded decorations that once graced
its towering surface. This monumental relic offers visitors a glimpse into the
might and craftsmanship of the ancient Axumite civilization, showcasing both
their architectural prowess and their reverence for their kings and the
afterlife.
