Located at 14° 7'53.77"N and 38°43'10.03"E, Stelae Square
serves as the heartbeat of Axum’s cultural and religious life. Every 17th of
September, the square becomes a stage for the Mesqel festival, where pilgrims
and locals alike gather to celebrate with fire, dance, and song. The air is
rich with history, as dry wooden structures are set ablaze, honoring the
ancient tradition of the festival. This sacred space connects the people of
Axum to their past, as the spiritual and social fabric of the community
intertwines.
Yet,
beyond its ceremonial significance, Stelae Square pulses with everyday life.
The edges of the square are home to small-scale vendors, offering handcrafted
goods and photography services to passing tourists. Here, visitors can immerse
themselves in the authentic rhythms of Axum, taking home a tangible piece of
its vibrant culture. Stelae Square is a place where the sacred and the
contemporary coexist, preserving its ancient traditions while embracing the
flow of modern commerce.
