Maryam Anza: Unveiling the Ancient Battlefields of Tigray
Nestled in the rugged beauty of the Gheralta Plateau, Maryam Anza is not only a remarkable archaeological site but also a portal to a forgotten chapter of Ethiopian history. It was here, in 2008, that the discovery of a monumental toppled stele, adorned with a crescent moon and an inscription in Ge’ez (the language of the ancient Aksumite civilization), marked the beginning of a thrilling archaeological journey that continues to this day.
This commemorative stele, dating back to the late 2nd or early 3rd century AD, was erected by King Bazat of Agabo to celebrate his victory in the Hawnehaw battle, a local conflict whose name translates to “brother against brother.” Located at the heart of this ancient battlefield, the stele symbolizes both a victory and the historical significance of the region during the Aksumite Empire.
Further excavation has uncovered fascinating remnants, including three broken pieces of a toppled stele, hinting at an earlier attempt to honor the victory of Bazat. This discovery evokes a comparison to the famous funerary stelae of Axum, adding another layer to the rich archaeological landscape of Tigray.
The quest to learn more about King Bazat and his kingdom of Agabo continues to intrigue historians and archaeologists alike. Could Agabo be the ancient name of the region? Was Bazat defending his kingdom from an invading force, or was he the aggressor?
As you explore this extraordinary site, visitors can also witness the medieval ruins that once formed part of a palatial building atop a high terrace, though much of the structure has been looted over time. Not far from here stands the Maryam Anza Church, a modern marvel built atop these ancient foundations just 25 years ago.
For travelers eager to immerse themselves in Ethiopia’s ancient past, Maryam Anza offers a rare glimpse into the victorious battles, lost kingdoms, and archaeological wonders that have shaped the Tigray region over centuries.
