"Mikael Kirseber: A Sacred Journey to Tigray’s Miraculous Rock-Hewn Church"
Located just 7 km from Adigrat along the Asmara road, Mikael Kirseber is a captivating four-chambered rock-hewn church with a powerful history. Legend has it that the church was carved in the horns of an agitated bull, adding a mystical allure to its origins. In 1985, the church narrowly escaped destruction when Italian forces attempted to set it alight during their march to Adwa. Miraculously, the petrol meant to ignite the church turned into holy water, preserving the sacred site. Emperor Menelik II later ordered a new church to be built above the original.
Though the church is accessible by transport from Adigrat, it holds a sacred place where women are not permitted to enter. Visitors can admire the waterlogged pit and the charming 20th-century paintings within the church. For those seeking a blend of history, legend, and spirituality, a visit to Mikael Kirseber is a deeply reflective journey, offering a glimpse into Tigrai’s rich religious heritage and miraculous past.
