Abraha We Atsbeha: A Timeless Masterpiece of Rock-Hewn Architecture
Nestled in one of the most scenic spots of the Tigray region, Abraha We Atsbeha is a true architectural gem that invites visitors to step back into history. Located just 17 km west of Wukro or 23 km from Megab, this ancient church is revered for its extraordinary interior decoration and magnificent murals that adorn its walls and ceiling. The church’s interior is divided into several aisles and bays by enormous columns, each carved with intricate patterns and curved crosses, showcasing the artistry of early Christian architecture.
Built, according to local tradition, in the 4th century (though some scholars date it to the 10th century), Abraha We Atsbeha predates the world-renowned Lalibela rock-hewn churches, making it one of the earliest and most significant examples of rock-cut church architecture. Visitors can explore its ancient books, traditional monk and priest clothing, and golden shoes believed to belong to King Atsbeha himself.
In addition to the church, Abraha We Atsbeha boasts its own church museum that displays ancient treasures, including manuscripts, crowns, and more, offering deeper insights into the region’s religious and cultural legacy.
